Chemically homogeneous evolution: a rapid population synthesis approach

چکیده

ABSTRACT We explore chemically homogeneous evolution (CHE) as a formation channel for massive merging binary black holes (BBHs). develop methods to include CHE in rapid population synthesis code, Compact Object Mergers: Population Astrophysics and Statistics (compas), which combines realistic models of with cosmological the star history Universe. For first time, we simultaneously conventional isolated under same set assumptions. This approach allows us constrain properties make simultaneous predictions about gravitational-wave detection rates BBH mergers channels. The overall mass distribution detectable BBHs is consistent existing observations. find that may yield up ${\sim} 70{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ all detections coming from evolution.

Can Population Genetics Adapt to Rapid Evolution?

Population genetics largely rests on a 'standard model' in which random genetic drift is the dominant force, selective sweeps occur infrequently, and deleterious mutations are purged from the population by purifying selection. Studies of phenotypic evolution in nature reveal a very different picture, with strong selection and rapid heritable trait changes being common. The time-rate scaling of ...

Habitat fragmentation, rapid evolution and population persistence

Associations between extinction and habitat fragmentation have been modelled and described, but we document the first clear mechanistic link between habitat fragmentation and population persistence, demonstrating that a rapid evolutionary response to fragmentation can yield conditions wherein some populations are more vulnerable to extinction. Historical differences in the partitioning and tenu...

Characteristics of chemically reacting compressible homogeneous turbulence

Direct numerical simulations ~DNS! are conducted to study the turbulence-chemical reaction interactions in homogeneous decaying compressible fluid flows. The reaction is of a single-step irreversible Arrhenius type. The results indicate that the heat of reaction has a noticeable influence on the solenoidal and the dilatational turbulent motions. The effect of reaction on the solenoidal velocity...

On subalgebras of an evolution algebra of a "chicken" population

We consider an evolution algebra which corresponds to a bisexual population with a set of females partitioned into finitely many different types and the males having only one type. For such algebras in terms of its structure constants we calculate right and plenary periods of generator elements. Some results on subalgebras of EACP and ideals on low-dimensional EACP are obtained.

Chemically Consistent Evolutionary Synthesis

To account for the range of stellar metallicities in local galaxies and for the increasing importance of low metallicities at higher redshift we present chemically consistent models for the spectral and chemical evolution of galaxies over cosmological timescales. We discuss advantages, limitations and future prospects of our approach.
